GEEX rocked!
Well, the first (of many hopefully) GEEX show is over. After a huge investment from MediaOne, and countless hours spent getting sponsors, exhibitors and speakers we can call the first year a great start! Just over 12,000 people walked through the event, and more than 180 gamers brought their PCs to the LAN party area to join in the 3 days of gaming fun. Many companies that opted for the "wait and see" approach to supporting a first year event, felt their choice was inaccurate and pledged their support for future events! There was even an exhibitor that purchased booth space on Thursday, following their overall high satisfaction with how well the layout was constructed and how much the the show added that much needed viewer participation.
The tournaments went quite smooth, each starting within minutes of the projected time. There were only a few issues with the machines sponsored by Geekbox Computers and Landing Zone, but were easily solved and things continued as they should. Vansilli added a very entertaining element to the tournaments with his extraordinary talents in match shout casting. Congratulations go out to team Chaos Crew for winning the DotA tournament, team Geekbox Computers for winning the TF2 tournament, team SureShot for winning the CS Source tournament (of course), and watFallOut for smashing the competition in TrackMania Nations Forever!
Many thanks to all those who made this event possible, namely MediaOne of Utah for putting up the investment and taking the risk. I hope the Utah gaming community was overall satisfied by the show, and I can't wait to see this event grow into what a gaming convention should be. Alliant Event Services did an excellent job of putting together the tournament stage and handling all of the visual elements of the show. Palit Multimedia came through at the last minute to provide excellent products for the TrackMania and TF2 tournaments, many thanks to you My[LiT]lePony (David), your assistance will be very much appreciated in the coming years as this event matures. The electrician from the Salt Palace did well, not a single power problem! Landing Zone and Geekbox Computers for their generous lending of PCs and Monitors to the tournament stage (the monitors are on sale for cheap, if you are looking, contact the Sandy Geekbox store for details and availability).
Soon, we will be starting a GEEX section in our forums dedicated to the goings on at the future events. We will provide insider information to many aspects of the show, and attempt to get consumer feedback directly from the dedicated gamers that attend our own LAN parties at the U of U. Thanks again to all for the continued support of Protocol 42, and for spreading the word and making a first year gaming convention a great success! We're looking at the South Towne Expo Center for next year, so stay tuned!

Loading, parking, etc...
You can unload your gear using a small loading area on the south east corner of the Salt Palace. From the link below, you'll see the line go from 200 south to about 100 yards north of 200 south on West Temple. This is where the loading area is...

The event is in the Grand Ballroom, in halls G, H, I, and J. the LAN party is in the H hall, the loading dock is just outside of the I hall, you can see this on this image...

The parking garage is a $7 per day charge. They will allow overnight parking for the gamers, only during this event. There is a little bit of a loophole, if you enter the garage, you aren't charged again until you re-enter the garage. So if you show up on Thursday, and you don't leave until Saturday, you aren't charged again. So if you plan to stay there, you'll save some $$.
This venue is different than what we're used to, so there are a few things that we'll have to get used to. I hope this event goes well, and everything is as good as our normal parties.

Protocol 42 will sponsor DotA at GEEX with $2500!!
The DotA tournament will have a cash prize of $2500 for the winning team (sorry, like martial arts grand master John Kreese in "The Karate Kid" said, second place is no place, there will be no prize for the runner up... 'Cept for maybe a shirt... Maybe...). This prize will be from Protocol 42. Sorry it took so long to secure the prize, and I hope this makes up for the delays (you 121 guys... I swear...). Now get to practicing, cuz it'll be some great competition.

GEEX update!
I just sent this in an email to everyone, but here is the online, indexed, static version!
Get ready for kick a** event at GEEX, only a little over 1 week away! Some great elements have been added to the event. Many sponsors have banded together to make this first year a great start for a long over due Utah Gaming and Electronics EXpo, and each following year will be even better!
Tournaments will include both PC and Xbox360 games with over $25,000 in cash and prizes up for grabs from Palit Multimedia, Geekbox, Landing Zone, Intel, NVIDIA and more! The tournament games include TF2, CS , TMNF, DotA, Halo 3, CoD 4, GH3, Gears of War, and Fight Night. As you can see, the tournament schedule is quite full, so expect some heavy competition. Vansilli will be shout casting the PC tournament matches, and he'll be putting together some great video for you to show your buddies after you recuperate.
The LAN party will run from 12:00 pm (noon) on Thursday (July 17), through 7:00 PM on Saturday (July 19), that's 55 hours of pure gaming fun, if you can handle it. The prepay discount has been extended to July 13th as well, so you can have more time to take advantage of the savings. The Marriott Hotel is across the street from the Salt Palace (to the East) will offer you a room for just $69 per night, just tell them you are with the GEEX event and they'll hook you up with that sweet rate. It'll be a good place to crash and shower if you are coming from far away.
Exhibitors are coming in slowly, but there are a few great companies that have come on board. Play n Trade, FatPipe, Best Buy, Dust-off and more! There will be speakers from the IGDA, Disney Interactive, Neumont University, Project Wish, Sensory Sweep Studios, and more! Check the speakers section of the website (http://www.geexshow.com/speakers.php) to make sure you are able to be present when the speaker that interests you will be there.
The first year event has been a bit of a rough road and a learning experience for all parties involved and we expect a nice turnout this time. Your support and the support from the gaming community will keep Salt Lake City on the map as a leader in technology and entertainment. We'll see you all there and bring some friends and spread the good word so we can continue to expand the event!
